Curtail your energy and start saving today!
Do you know when to power down?
Global Adjustment is one of the largest components of your electricity bill. Did you know that is surprisingly represents a significant 40% to 60% of your overall bill?
What if you could take control of your electricity bill and curtail your usage through innovative planning and monitoring tools that will help you reduce your top 5 peak demand hours and subsequently your monthly bill. Our state- of-the-art technology will provide you the 7 day forecast and insight you require in order to know how much to decrease and when to decrease (time of day insights).
What is Global Adjustment*?
All customers who use electricity and live in Ontario pay for global adjustment.
For large consumers, they will pay the global adjustment in two ways, either as a Class A or Class B customer:
- Many customers with an average peak demand of above 5 megawatts (MW) have the opportunity pay global adjustment based on how much their peak demand use contributes to provincial peak demand – these customers are referred to as Class A under the Industrial Conservation Initiative. See Global Adjustment Class A Eligibility for more information.
- Customers with a peak demand of 50 kilowatts (kW) and up to and including 5 MW will typically pay the global adjustment through their regular billing cycle with their local distribution company − these customers are referred to as Class B.
- As of January 1, 2017, Class B customers with an average peak demand of above 1 MW and up to and including 5 MW can opt to be charged as a Class A customer under the Industrial Conservation Initiative. Learn more at Global Adjustment Class A Eligibility.
- In April 2017, the ICI threshold was further reduced from 1 MW to 500 kW to make Ontario consumers/market participants in targeted manufacturing and industrial sectors, including greenhouses, (i.e., with NAICS codes commencing with the digits “31”, “32”, “33” or “1114”) with an average monthly peak demand of greater than 500 kW and less than 1 MW eligible to opt-in to the ICI.

Industrial Conservation Initiative (ICI) and Global Adjustment
Here's what you need to know
Ontario Power grids are designed to meet peak electricity consumption. The Industrial Conservation Initiative (ICI), first introduced by the IESO in 2010, is a demand response program designed to shift large electricity users’ consumption to off-peak hours.
Renteknik Group has been helping large businesses all across Ontario take action on peak demand and curtail their energy usage, ultimately saving them substantial money on their bill.
Global Adjustments Class A Eligibility*
Customers with peak demand greater than 1 MW but less than or equal to 5 MW
Customers with an average peak demand of above 1 MW and up to and including 5 MW will be informed by their distributor, or the IESO if they are transmission-connected, before May 31 each year if they are eligible. These customers must opt in by June 15 of each year to participate in ICI. They will then be charged as Class A customers for the adjustment period starting on July 1.
Existing Class A customers who participated in one or more of the conservation or demand management programs specified in the recently amended Reg. 429/04 and dropped below the peak demand threshold during a base period for an adjustment period that began on or after July 1, 2016 may be eligible to continue participating in the initiative and should contact their LDC for more details.

Customers with peak demand greater than 500kW and less than 1 MW in manufacturing and industrial sectors
In April 2017, the Government of Ontario reduced the ICI threshold from 1 MW to 500 kW to make Ontario consumers/market participants in targeted manufacturing and industrial sectors, including greenhouses, (i.e., with NAICS codes commencing with the digits “31”, “32”, “33” or “1114”) with an average monthly peak demand of greater than 500 kW and less than 1 MW, eligible to opt-in to the ICI. See Ontario Regulation 429/04. Eligible customers will be informed by their distributor before May 31 each year if they are eligible. These customers must opt in by June 15 of each year to participate in ICI. They will then be charged as Class A customers for the adjustment period starting on July 1.
Customers with peak demand above 5 MW
Under the ICI, customers with an average peak demand above 5 MW automatically qualify as Class A customers. These customers must opt out by June 15 of each year if they choose not to participate in ICI.
